Lewisville Mayor Gene Carey presented a proclamation Monday honoring the 25th Anniversary of the Lewisville ISD Special Olympics Team to the head of the delegation, Coach Jim Domer during the July 21st city council meeting.
Coach Domer, who has been a volunteer with the group for its full 25 years, accepted the proclamation and took the opportunity to thank the city of Lewisville, especially the Parks and Leisure Services department, for their support over the years.
The mayor congratulated the group for building character, encouraging perseverance, nurturing self confidence, and developing leadership skills of the many LISD student athletes who have participated in Lewisville ISD Special Olympics for the last 25 years. Lewisville ISD Special Olympics was created in 1983 with a mission to provide year round sports training and competition to Lewisville students with intellectual disabilities. At the time, Mr. Domer was a recent college graduate newly employed as an adaptive physical eduation teacher with the Lewisville school district, a position he still holds. He banded with other teachers to create the group which has gone from a small group of students to over 125 athletes and families. Currently, the Lewisville "Lightning" group offers nine sports. The Lewisville Lightning families have dedicated this anniversary year to thanking the generous friends, neighbors, school district and city that make these sporting opportunities possible while celebrating the incredible accomplishments of their athletes.
Coach Domer was accompanied by several current athletes and their families, whom the mayor, city council members and assembly also acknowledged.
The group is looking forward to its main fundraiser, the 14th annual Golf Classic Tournament at Indian Creek Golf Club in September. For more information about LISD Special Olympics or to become an athlete or volunteer, please visit the website at www.lisdso.org
