Surf’s Up at Flower Mound UMC: Children Attend VBS, Contribute to Denton/Dallas Homeless Ministry

0 Ratings / 0 Comments

Nearly 200 children and more than 100 volunteers spent a week at the beach, and they never left Flower Mound. From July 14-18, kids from preschool up through high school went Surfin’ the Scriptures at Flower Mound United Methodist Church’s Vacation Bible School.

As part of the week’s festivities, participants donated items for the Salvation Army in downtown Denton and the homeless in downtown Dallas. In total, the kids contributed 234 T-shirts; 595 pair of socks; 206 tubes of toothpaste; 338 toothbrushes; 172 sticks of deodorant; and 1,371 bottles of water.

Kellie Sanford, Director of Children’s Ministries, said that, “Our goal was to reach kids in the community and within our church. We wanted them to experience God’s love and share their blessings with others who are less fortunate.”

Parent volunteer, mother of three and crew leader Sue Kash thoroughly enjoyed the week. “It was great to see the kids’ enthusiasm and to share it with them. We learned as much from them as they learned from us!”

During the summer, FMUMC offers youth and children choir trips, weekly socials, ongoing Bible study, and the Christians in Action (CIA) outreach program, in which 4th to 6th grade students participate in weekly mission projects. Children make a difference in their community and beyond by reaching out to nursing home residents, shut-ins, impoverished families in Juarez, Mexico, and homeless men and women. For more information about how to get involved with the Denton County homeless ministry or for more about Flower Mound United Methodist Church, call Kellie Sanford at 972-355-2711, or visit the church website at www.fmumc.net.
