SVAA was incorporated in 1968 with the philosophy that every child must play and that there are no tryouts. All SVAA teams, with the exception of its brand new Coach Formed Baseball League (for grades 6 and higher), are formed around elementary schools, and grade levels. The association is organized, administered and coached by volunteers along with a small office staff to coordinate and execute the quality programs that have been in place for 40 years.
When the association was formally incorporated in 1968, it included children from the North Dallas and Lake Highlands areas attending school in the Richardson Independent School District. Today, SVAA provides recreational sports programs in Tackle Football, Flag Football, T-Ball, Baseball, Softball, Basketball and Volleyball. Nearly 9,000 youth from Kindergarten through 12th grade participate from Richardson, Lake Highlands, North Dallas, Plano, McKinney, and Lakewood. Both public and private schools are represented in all SVAA sports programs.
Tackle Football, Flag Football, Volleyball and Fall Baseball/Softball registration is currently open at www.svaa.org. Weight and age restrictions are enforced for the Tackle Program in the 4th, 5th and 6th grade levels. Current registration deadlines are: Baseball/Softball (Grades K through 9) – August 10, Volleyball (Grades 3 through 12) – August 17, Tackle Football (Grades 4 through 6) – August 17, Flag Football (Grades 1 through 3) – August 31.
The Football program will hold three nights of conditioning at Fretz Park on August 12, 13, and 14 from 7-8 PM under the direction of Lutheran High School Varsity players. SVAA provides the players with all needed equipment on August 21, 22 and 23 and practice begins over the weekend of August 21. A highlight of the season will be on October 24, 25, and 26 when all tackle teams will have an opportunity to play at SMU’s Ford Stadium.
To celebrate the 40th Anniversary on August 30, Outback Steakhouse will be cooking hamburgers during the Football Jamboree held at Fretz Park in Dallas. Scrimmages will take place from 9 AM until 2PM. There is no admission to the Jamboree but hamburgers ($4) and drinks ($1) will be available. Profits will go to the SVAA Scholarship Fund.
We hope to see many previous SVAA players, coaches and parents at the event. A special tribute will be made to those who started SVAA: Jay Weinstein, Mert Jessen, Don Price, Carroll Maxwell, Bill Kinder as well as deceased contributors Al Hockaday, Jack Bundy, Pat Horan and Ron Bennett who formed the association so many years ago.
Mark your calendars now for August 30, and come help SVAA celebrate 40 years of providing youth sports programs.
