The Lake Highlands band program has been busy during the summer break. The band’s biggest fundraiser, the North Texas Festival of Drums & Bugles, took place on July 17th, hosted by the Lake Highlands Area Band Club. A sell-out crowd of over 5,000 drum corps fans from all corners of the nation descended upon Wildcat-Ram Stadium. The event is considered the longest-running show (32 years strong!) west of the Mississippi in Drum Corps International’s Summer Music Games Tour circuit of over 135 cities each year.
For the student leaders of the Lake Highlands Wildcat Band, summer ended July 31st when they, along with the directors and parent chaperones, took a road trip to Beavers Bend Resort in the Ouachita National Forest in Oklahoma for three days of planning sessions, leadership training and river rapids. Once back home, the entire Wildcat Marching Band entered summer marching band camp mode on August 4th, arriving at 6:30 AM EVERY morning for “2 a days” to start learning the music and associated marching drill for this year’s halftime show. Open your front door at 7 AM and have a listen! Although this year’s show won’t have some of the popular and well-known tunes as last year’s baseball-themed Pastime show contained, it will have entertaining and demanding music necessary to compete in this year’s statewide UIL competition. So get ready for another year of great halftime shows!

And finally, we wish to welcome three new members to the band staff. Tate Fincher comes to us from Wylie High School, where he was assistant director in charge of the 3rd concert band, assistant with the marching band, and jazz director. He will serve as our new Symphonic Band director and assistant with marching. He is a UTA graduate and also owns his own drill writing company. Renee Cantrell comes to us to serve as our Director of Color Guard Activities. She comes from JJ Pearce’s award-winning color guard where she served in a similar capacity. Working with her as her assistant will be Diunte White. Both Ms. Cantrell and Mr. White are past members of Drum Corps International’s elite group of marching corps.
The band directors, student musicians and the parent-members of the Lake Highlands Area Band Club are looking forward to delivering another great, action-packed marching season. See you all on the gridiron!
GO BAND!!!
