Earlier this month, under the direction of Coach Stephanie Hause and Coach Shelli Wandersee, as well as three time Captain Senior Andrea Godwin and second year Captain Samantha Smith, the Newman Smith Cheer program stunted, jumped and danced their way to the Universal Cheerleaders Association Summer Camp Team Championship held at the University of North Texas campus.

The UCA’s annual camp is one of the most competitive cheerleading camps in North Texas.  Even though Newman Smith’s previous attendance at the camp has resulted in numerous awards and honors, this is the first year the program has earned the camp’s top honor: CampChampions.

In addition to being named camp champions Newman Smith during the daily competitions also received three blue ribbons, three spirit sticks, one daily “Top Banana” award, one gold ribbon, “Top Banana” for the week, and was named the camp’s overall Extreme Dance Champion.

Newman Smith cheerleaders were very competitive in the camp’s individual competitions as well.  During the camp jump-off, Freshmen Stephanie Knudsen, Nicole Schmitt, Nicole Rodriquez, Camila Rodriquez, Sophomore Samantha Smith, Junior Marie Mai, and Seniors Andrea Godwin and Kelsey Williams all performed magnificently.  Freshmen Camila Rodriquez and Stephanie Knudsen, Junior Marie Mai and Senior Andrea Godwin all made it to the competition finals.  And, Freshman Stephanie Knudsen was named UCA camp jump-off champion.

As a result of their All-Star selection Nicole Schmitt has been asked to participate in Houston’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and, Samantha Smith, Sarah Adams and Andrea Godwin have been asked to participate in the 2008-09 winter break UCA London, England performance program.  Andrea Godwin and Samantha Smith have also been selected to participate in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City later this fall.

The NSHS 2008-09 Freshmen Squad includes:  TaylorMarie Beck, Haleigh Brown, Paige Doyle, Nastasha Gerlt, Sandy Gonzalez, Katherine Grandell, Stephanie Knudsen, Payton Lingle, Amina Meyer, Camila Rodriguez, Nicole Rodriguez, Nicole Schmitt, Summer Scott, Kendall Watson, and Rachel Zettler.
