Laughter and Love
On Friday, September 19th, a wonderful group of high school students from McKinney Christian Academy paid a visit to the seniors at Towne Creek Apartments. They brought along with them, trays of homemade cookies and smiles that warmed the hearts of all whom visited with these wonderful students.
The morning started out with the students serving coffee, cookies and other refreshments to the seniors, then later sitting and chatting about their lives. The students each had a map of the United States and they asked each resident to tell them a little bit about where they were born and about their childhood, families, occupations, etc. They later shared their findings and gave a little talk about the person they interviewed. The students also shared their own backgrounds, future plans and hopes and dreams with the seniors.
While this was going on, Mr. Paul Thompson, the music/drama teacher, who accompanied the students, was busy playing beautiful gospel hymns and sing-a-long songs on the old piano in the corner. The activity room was soon buzzing with laughter, chatter and music.
As the morning progressed, other residents, unaware of the activity, stopped in to join the fun. It was standing room only by afternoon. A little art demonstration of a country scene, complete with a picket fence and bluebonnets, done with pastel chalk was given by yours truly, Toni Andrukaitis. Then students and residents were able to work on some pastel drawings and other crafts. Some of the students made lovely cards to give to the seniors telling them how much they enjoyed their visit. They also made dozens of little decorated necklaces and mini frames that were worn and displayed by all.
The kindness and sincere enthusiasm demonstrated by the McKinney Christian Academy students and Mr. Thompson were very much appreciated by the seniors at Towne Creek. Often times, young people live far away from their own grandparents and seniors do not always live near their family. This was a wonderful way to meld the generations and show young and old alike that laughter and love go a long way.
We would like to thank Sandy Sims, the Spanish teacher and Missions Coordinator at McKinney Christian Academy for coordinating the visit and offering to come back again for an even bigger and better holiday visit in November. We look forward another great day of laughter and love.
