Wildcat marching band and boosters hit full stride

The fall semester is in full swing and that means your Lake Highlands Wildcat marching band and boosters are busy with all things music.  Band members are perfecting their music assignments and drill movements on the field in preparation for the important UIL All-Region competition on October 15th and, if successful, the All-Area competition on October 25th, both held at Mesquite Memorial Stadium.  At this point of the season, the band has completed and performed two-thirds of its full marching show.  The band will get a couple of “warm ups” leading up to their UIL events at marching contests at Midlothian ISD Stadium on October 4th and Plano East’s Clark Stadium on October 11th.

Although the marching season is still young, some of our jazz band musicians have already achieved individual awards.  At a recent competition held at SachseHigh School on September 20th where auditions were held for All-Region Jazz Band, four Lake Highlands’ jazz musicians earned a spot, with three others earning alternate positions.  Winners included Garrett Wingfield, first chair tenor sax; Luke Wingfield, first chair trumpet; Andrew Smith, first chair bass trombone; and Bayo Ajibade, drum set.  Alternates were Michael Stradley, tenor trombone; Toby Furr, tenor trombone; and Stephen Adams, bari sax.

On September 27th, our percussion band members competed in the Plano Drumline Competition at Clark Stadium, where they earned 3rd place in their division.  Two of our musicians also took part in solo competitions during the event.  Jordan Brooks took first place in the multi-tenor category and Bayo Ajibade came in fifth with the snare.  In addition, Lake Highlands won “Most Outstanding Bass Drum Line” award.

“Mums the word” with the band booster club as homecoming mum preparation is well under way under the direction of booster parent Pam Ruatta.  Orders may now be placed during the lunch periods at the high school.

Please visit the band’s website, www.lhabc.org, for a listing of upcoming fall events and plan on coming out to see, hear and support these fine young musicians.
