I bet you woke up this morning and thought “I wonder who came up with the Dewey Decimal System”. No! Well the 3rd graders at St. Pius X School could tell you. 3rd graders recently finished a unit on “Dewey and the Decimals”! They not only went to the library to discover non-fiction books in 398, 398.2, 398.6, 811,812 and the unforgettable 813 but also that these numbers correlate to fairy tales, riddles, poetry and plays. This seems like big thinking for such little people but as always the 3rd grade teachers, along with the school librarian Mrs. Kathleen Huggins, brought the facts to life. Ten students were each dressed up as one of the ten categories of the Dewey decimal system. Mr. 400 wore a Spanish vest, held a dictionary and a question mark puppet. If you were Miss 600, you not only wore a fireman’s hat, but you held music sticks, and even the library gerbil! Traveling on to 700 was a lot of fun since that includes all of the sports! So, a basketball, a bat, a baseball cap and of course a Tiger paw to symbolize the SPX Tigers was included! Now I bet these students may not always be able to tell you exactly what book number goes to what section…but they may have a whole new understanding for old Dewey.
