Will Smith and Tony Romo visit Lake Highlands High School pep rally

3 Ratings / 2 Comments

The school was electrically charged all day. The Lake Highlands Wildcat football team was headed to the second round of the playoffs against Tyler John Tyler, and the Lady Cats were preparing to travel to San Marcos to face Austin Westlake for the 5-A state semi-finals. When the pep rally was moved from Thursday to Tuesday, rumors began circulating about a “special visitor.”

Nothing, however, could have prepared the students and teachers for the moment that Dallas Cowboy quarterback Tony Romo and movie star Will Smith strolled into the gym. “People were guessing who the guests were, but everyone’s jaw dropped when they walked out,” remembered Travis Crawford, a senior captain on the team. "It was nice of them to take time out of their day to help us get ready for Saturday’s big game."

“I’m not sure if we’ll get any school work done this week,” said Beth Solomon, president of the Highlandette drill team. “We are all just feeling on top of the world after seeing them up close and hearing their message of encouragement.” Volleyball captain, Tori Mellinger, agreed. “Tony Romo was very inspirational,” she said. “He talked about never giving up, even when people tell you that you won’t make it.”

“Will Smith had an important message for us,” added Austin Jones, who has been recognized for his accomplishments playing offense and defense. “He said we should all work to make the others around us better. We can learn a lot from listening to these men.”

At the request of Smith and Romo, no press was permitted to attend the pep rally. They also wanted a private meeting with the football team, the volleyball squad, and the cheerleaders. “It was very exciting to meet them in person,” said mascot Stephanie Tomba. “We asked Will about the Fresh Prince of Bel Air, and he sang a little for us.”

“Have you ever been hugged by Will Smith?,” asked bell boy Chris Smith, who requested and was granted the privilege. “Both of them made us feel special.”

“They wanted it to be all about the kids,” said principal Walter Kelly, one of the few to know the identity of the visitors. “They wanted to inspire the kids to give their all, and they made it a celebration.” (photos by Sid Snively)
