Rudy’s got its start out of a little gas station in LeonSprings, outside of San Antonio, in the 1980s.
At the time, the gas station wasn’t even operational. But the people kept coming for the barbecue, so they started selling the fuel again.
“We still sell fuel. You can come in, smell the smoke and get your gas,” said Robert Wolf, principal owner and franchisee.
The country store also sells its sauce, pralines, peanut patties, chips, candies, ice cream and T-shirts and hats.
But mainly, Rudy’s is a meat market, offering smoked meats the central Texas barbeque way – ordered by weight and custom cut.
The restaurant features brisket, turkey breast, pork loin, ham, chicken, sausage, jalapeño sausage and three types of pork ribs with jumbo potatoes from the pit. Prime rib and peppered tenderloin are available on the weekends.
Rudy's 100-percent smoked products cooked in the restaurant are the reason for the restaurant's popularity, Wolf said.
