Project Graduation 2009
"Pomp and Circumstance”, cap and gown, family and friends....graduation is a time for celebrating, but for the seniors of McKinney School District it has become a night of safe partying, without drugs or alcohol, thanks to Project Graduation.McKinney Project Graduation has been helping seniors celebrate graduation alcohol-free for the past six years. The event was held this year at Meyers Event Center in McKinney from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m. on graduation evening, June 5. Approximately 1100 seniors and 300 guests participated in the festivities making it a record turnout. The students took home $35,000 in cash prizes and over $85,000 in food, coupons, shirts and prizes, including the grand prize car, which was donated by Chris Godwin of Nissan of McKinney for the third consecutive year. Keeping the masses busy was not difficult as there were casino games, a rock climbing wall, inflatable games including an obstacle course and a Velcro wall, sumo wrestling, live music, a DJ, a movie room and much more! There were also food and drink aplenty thanks to the many wonderful donations from the community. Did the students enjoy the event? McKinney High graduate Reid Garcia “liked that Project Graduation included all the MISD high schools. It was nice to have all the seniors in McKinney together one last time.” The cash prizes are always popular and Kenny Hudman put his to good use. “All the money I won paid for my gas to go to my college orientation.” Project Graduation Director Deana McGonagill and her committee of volunteers have put in many long hours planning for this special night, but the end result is what counts. “Thanks to the generosity of the businesses and residents of our community as well as school organizations and city and county entities we were able to provide 1400 young people from MISD high schools with a safe and fun-filled graduation night. We owe a huge thanks to the many volunteers who helped make it happen. Our motto is ‘If just one life is saved it’s all worthwhile’ and that is what motivates us to continue Project Graduation each year. We encourage more people to become part of our goal of saving lives,” said McGonagill. If you are interested in volunteering or sponsoring Project Graduation 2010 please visit the website at www.projectgraduationmckinney.com.
