Pack 19 Webelos attend camp at Camp James Ray at Lake Texoma

The three Webelos II Cub Scouts from Pack 19 at Lovers Lane United Methodist Church attended Resident camp at James Ray Scout Reservation on Lake Texoma June 28 through July 1. Dillon Mosman, Charlie Stalder, Nathaniel Mann and Webelos Leader Carolyn Stalder endured 104 degree days, a big rain storm, mud and bugs to have a great time at camp.

The boys performed an original skit they titled, “Knife Unsafety” based on the safety rules they learned for knife skills.  “Earning my whittling chip and getting my knife was the best thing at camp. And meeting new friends. I liked fishing, too,” said 10-year old Charlie Stalder.

Dillon Mosman, age 10, had this to say about camp, “I liked breakfast because they had milk and cereal. I liked marbles because it was fun to learn a new game I did not know about and it was fun to win. I liked the water slide because it was fun. I have yet to take a tick bath.  The Trading Post was fun because I got a knife and walking stick and Gatorade.”

“The bugs and heat were miserable,” said Nathaniel Mann, “ but everything else made it worth it.  I would have to say that probably my favorite thing was Readyman because I got cherry cobbler. I liked the activity where we tied the knots and did the Whittling Chip. The skit hilarious because we killed each other with knives.  The Boys Scout staff  were nice-ish. I wouldn’t necessarily say they were always nice, but they were definitely pretty nice.  I like the boat a lot because I rowed around in Lake Texoma. I wish would have had more time to sleep while I was there and I wish I could have done more BB guns.”  Nathaniel wore his uniform almost the entire time at camp.  “The uniform is a sense of proudness for me. I just like it. On my belt I had a flashlight, a compass and sometimes a knife.”

Carolyn Stalder, the Webelos II leader, said in an email home to parents during camp, “These boys are so grown up! And yet they are still little boys with their blankies. What a neat age. Somewhat independent yet still needing help (mostly with keeping their stuff together).   I really like these boys. It's been neat hanging out with them, and they talk about stuff, some of it silly, some of it serious. And I really truly like them .  It's encouraging to look at the Boy Scouts here and imagine that our boys  can grow up to be responsible young men like the ones working here. This week has been a gift. A really hot gift.”

Carolyn Stalder won 1st place in the Annual Sailboat Regatta.

The following email was sent from Stalder to parents after the 3rd day:

All three begging for bed tonight. They all showered (rinsed actually- no soap) with some to much cajoling to cool off before bed.

They had the best skit of all. Original and making fun of scouts.

This is great. They are learning a lot of life lessons.
Such as:

1) inside out socks are like clean socks

2) carrying a backpack with a pack of 6 D batteries makes your shoulders ache by the 3rd day

3) hanging flashlights in tents is nice mood lighting but attracts bugs

4) eating in bed brings ants to your tent

5 not drinking and getting dehydrated feels bad

6) wearing swimsuit all day saves time but gives you chapped butt

7 spending all your money the first two days means you don't have any money left for chocolate on days 3 & 4

And lots more!!! Had fun. All ready to go home.
