Chris Coats: Soaping up Fido for a good cause

1 Rating / 0 Comments

Scrub a dub dub, time to put Fido in the tub.  It’s Richardson AnimaLuv’s 6th annual Soap & Suds Dog Wash to be held on Sunday, July 12 from 1 pm to 4 pm at the city’s shelter.  Proceeds from this fundraiser will be used by AnimaLuv, a nonprofit organization for medical treatment and care of the shelter’s animals looking for homes.

AnimaLuv was founded in 2004 by Richardson resident, Peggy Thorburn.  The longtime volunteer has devoted hundreds of hours to the shelter.

“I have a tremendous amount of faith that helping the shelter is something I’m supposed to do,” she said.  “I told God that I will help His creatures as much as I can but would He give me a hand.  And to this day I’ve never been let down.”

On the contrary – she’s been lifted up by the legion of volunteers from church groups to Girl Scouts helping with fundraising events during the year.  But the group and shelter needs the public’s help during these dog days of summer.  Why not spruce up your doggy with a wash for a good cause?  And cat owners, don’t feel left out.  The group is also hosting Chip a Cat – Get it Back microchipping at the event.

But more importantly, through this fundraiser and others, hundreds of animals’ lives are saved each year.  Right now, due to the influx of animals being received, the dogs and cats are being double caged – it’s an overload of shelter animals looking for homes.

Go to the shelter’s website at www.cor.net to view all the pics of the adorable dogs and cats posing on a patriotic red, white, and blue backdrop who are up for adoption.  Even better, Thorburn encourages folks to stop by the shelter during the wash or any time to offer support or volunteer.

“These animals are looking for us to save them,” she said.  “For those animals that leave the shelter, they know they are getting a second chance.  They turn around and look at you and that look in their eyes says it all.”
