With the end of summer approaching, area families are quickly preparing for the inevitable start to school. Traditionally, parents show more enthusiasm in the ‘back to school’ fervor, while kids are reluctant to leave their video games and swimming pools. One thing they will both agree on is the myriad of extracurricular activities that become available as the school year begins. There are several programs out there that even help kids build character, leadership, and community involvement, while also remaining a low-cost alternative for parents.
Girl Scouts is an organization that helps girls ages 5 – 17 discover their values, skills, and the world around them; connect with others in a multicultural environment; and take action to make a difference in the world. Girl Scout Service Unit 148, which serves the Wylie, Community and Farmersville ISDs and the families in those communities, will hold its fall registration sign-up on Thursday, Sept 10 from 7 – 8pm. Sign-ups will be held that night at the following Wylie ISD elementary schools: Akin, Birmingham, Cox, Dodd, Groves, Hartman, Smith, Tibbals and Whitt.
At each school, girls will have the opportunity to learn songs, play games or make a craft to take home, and learn more about Girl Scouts from current members. Girl Scout adult volunteers will also be on hand to answer any parent/guardian questions.
“Girl Scouts gives girls the opportunity to do things they would have never imagined possible,” said Debbie Brown, Girl Scout Service Unit 148 manager. “From camping, hiking, sailing and visiting geological sites, to designing Web sites, crocheting, planting community gardens and learning about space exploration, Girl Scouts offers a wide variety of new and fun experiences for both girls and adults.”
Adults are also encouraged to consider registering as an adult Girl Scout volunteer. Volunteers can work with girls of all ages as event or trip chaperones, lead troops and lead special activities such as hiking or geocaching.
