Diary of a cupcake: Society Bakery in M Streets

Roshi Muns, owner of Society Bakery in M Streets calls her store “grandma’s kitchen with an edge.” Society Bakery, which opened in February 2005, was showcased on The Ellen DeGeneres show in 2008 as one of the Top 10 best cupcakes in America.

“We haven’t been slow since,” said Muns.

And of the big bakeries that made the cut, Society was the only homegrown Texas bakery on the list.

Of all the fancy cupcake boutiques popping up all around, Society hold its own and is still one of the most talked about places in Dallas to buy a cupcake.

“We back up whatever hype you hear about us,” said Muns. “We stand behind everything we sell.”

With an established, quality bakery come many loyal customers. Among them is Al Stewart.

“I’ve eaten cupcakes coast to coast. These are the best in the country,” said Stewart. “She doesn’t make anything we can make at home.”

Among the top sellers is a Boston Cream cupcake, which has cream filling in the middle, along with the peanut butter chocolate and the all around southern favorite, red velvet. Other available cupcake flavors are the Brooklyn Blackout, which has a chocolate pudding center, banana chocolate chip, lemon poppy seed, spice, and many others.

“There’s something in here for everybody,” said Muns. “We try to make sure we listen to what our customers want.”

All of the cupcakes are baked fresh all day, everyday.

One thing that Muns has learned is there is no reason a business can’t be profitable and charitable at the same time. That phrase resonated in her mind after watching an episode of Oprah while writing up her business plan years ago.

Since then, the bakery has donated to a long list of local and national charities and organizations including The American Cancer Society, The American Red Cross, Dallas Children’s AdvocacyCenter, SPCA, Dallas schools and more.

And thus, the Society Bakery brand was born: “Be good to your sweet tooth and be good to society.”

The price for Society cupcakes is $2.95 each, and filled cupcakes are $3.25.
