Coppell High School Band students brought home a record 130 medals from the 2009 Texas UIL State Solo and Ensemble Contest.
More than 150 CHS band students competed in contest, which is known as one of the most difficult and largest solo contests in the United States. The contest was held May 30 at the University of Texas in Austin.
“Over the past 10 years the CHS Band has been fortunate to have more students each year attend the Texas State Solo Contest on solos than any other band, choir or orchestra program in Texas,” said Scott Mason, CISD director of instrumental music.
“Also over the past 10 years Coppell has earned more gold and silver medals than any other music program in Texas at the state contest,” he said.
This year, Coppell had a record 157 students attending that had qualified at the regional level where they had to perform a memorized solo from the hardest list of UIL solos.
Of these 157 students, 44 students earned a first division for their solo and a gold medal while 86 students received a second division and a silver medal.
“The students in our music programs in Coppell are extremely talented and dedicated students,” Mason said, adding that many begin working on their solos in July for the competitions in February and May of the following year.
“We are also fortunate to have an extremely talented and dedicated private lesson staff at both our high school and middle school programs.” he said.
In addition, six CHS students were named “Outstanding Soloists” for the contest. They include: Patrick Broadwell, alto saxophone; Grace Choe, flute; Max Ginnell, percussion; Shawn Izadi, bari saxophone; Shaan Patel, trombone and Paul Blazek, bass clarinet.
