Creating Security Blankets for Children in Need
Collin/Dallas/Grayson County Chapter of Project Linus blanketeers (volunteers) gathered for a day of blanket making at the First Methodist Church in McKinney on August 29 where over 20 “blanketeers” from Collin, Dallas, and Grayson counties worked together to create security blankets for children in need. There was laughter and togetherness shared throughout the day with new friendships blossoming among people that just met for the blanket making event that day. “I love these blanket days! Everyone is working together, sharing their talents and creating a tangible item to bring comfort to a child. Each person leaves here with the knowledge that they have made a difference in a child’s life. I can’t think of a better use of a day than that.” says Chapter Coordinator, Theresa Costin. Project Linus is a national organization with chapters around the country with the mission of providing new, handmade blankets to critically ill and traumatized children. Since it’s inception in November 2004, the chapter has distributed over 5,000 blankets to comfort children in this area. Blankets are all new blankets that are sewn, quilted, knitted or crocheted, or no sew tied fleece. When asked why she became a blanketeer, Dianna Crouse said “It feels good being with others that love what I love. I'm not a long time quilter and I've lots to learn, but that's the fun of it. It has also made me even more aware of how precious the good health of my kids and grandkids is. I try and think of the child that will snuggle in each of my blankets (as I make them) and pray it brings him/her some comfort and love.” The Frisco Public Library is hosting the second annual all day Make A Blanket Day on September 19 in the Vivian Stark McCallum Room on the second floor of the library. Everyone is invited to join in and lend a hand. “There will be quilt squares to design or color, blankets to assemble along with other activities that the entire family can do together,” according to Chapter Coordinator, Theresa Costin. “Last year’s Frisco Library Event was a huge success and we expect it will even be better this year. We love the idea of kids helping kids,” Costin went on to say. For more information about the Collin/Dallas/Grayson CountyChapter of Project Linus please visit www.PLDallas.org.
