Garland Mayor Ronald E. Jones spoke to Troop 57 at the troop’s meeting on September 29. Mayor Jones presented a parliamentary workshop to the Scouts as a part of troop leadership training. Mayor Jones is a member of the National Association of Parliamentarians.
During the month of September, Troop 57 concentrated on leadership training. Topics included duties of troop officers, the boy led troop and patrol, conduct of Patrol Leaders’ Council meetings, and servant leadership. The Scouts also spent time examining the troop’s progress, evaluating individual activities to determine the activities most successful and brainstorming new activities.
After Mayor Jones’ presentation, he remained at the meeting to visit with individual Scouts and answer questions. Councilman Doug Athas, a Troop 57 adult leader, participated in the workshop also. Mayor Jones and Councilman Athas gave the troop valuable insight into the workings of a typical city council meeting.
Troop 57 has been chartered by First United Methodist Church Garland since 1945. The troop has a membership of 75 active Scouts and 40 registered adults. Troop 57 will be celebrating 65 years of Scouting and the 100th anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America with a reunion on February 13, 2010.
