For the 19th consecutive year, the Coppell High School Marching Band has earned a Division I rating at the UIL Marching Contest.
The CHS Band was one of 13 5A-bands competing in the annual contest for Region 20 in Duncanville Oct. 17. The Coppell band was one of four bands to earn straight ones from all three judges.
“I believe this was by far the best show so far this year,” said Scott Mason, CISD director of instrumental music.
One judge stated: “This band sets the standard for marching bands in the state of Texas.”
Another judge commented that the brass section has to be one of the best anywhere in the U.S.
Mason said more visuals were added this week to enhance the music program since the band competed in the Bands of America regional competition in Arlington Oct. 10.
The CHS Band earned sixth place out of 29 bands from all over Texas and Oklahoma at that competition.
Still more changes are in store for the CHS show before the band heads to its final competition of the year at the Bands of America Super Regional Championships in San Antonio Oct. 24.
That contest, which the CHS Band competes in every other year when it is not competing in the UIL state marching contest, will be tough, Mason said.
“Some of the best marching bands in the U.S. will be at that contest. There are more than 50 bands and only 12 make the finals,” he said.
Bands of America competitions are typically more visually oriented than other marching competitions, Mason said, adding that the focus of the Coppell band has always been on music education and a more traditional marching show.
The Coppell band will perform at 10:45 a.m. Oct. 24 in San Antonio’s Alamodome.
