After a poor turnout for the"Empty the Shelter" Day, Rowlett Animal Shelter still needs help in finding homes for more great pets. Only 5 dogs and 2 cats were adopted at the event held on October 17, 2009.
Cats reach through the bars to make human contact as they meow for attention. The sounds of the dogs barking is heartbreaking as they all wag their tails and their sad eyes hope for you to take them home.
Rowlett Animal Shelter is full to capacity and has seen an increase in the number of owner surrndered animals due to the economy. Recently 17 animals were surrendered by their owners in one week! Frequently the shelter must ask for owners to wait for a week to bring the pets in because their is no room at the shelter. When the shelter gets this full, it is likely that pets who have been at the shelter the longest will have to be euthanized to make room for incoming pets.
In Rowlett alone, more than 2000 pets were picked up by Rowlett Animal Control last year. Only 500 were returned to owners; 771 were adopted or sent to other shelters and rescue groups. The remaining pets, numbering about 700, were destroyed.
