During the evening of Sunday, Oct. 18, more than 120 people helped take apart 18 large CANstruction sculptures that were on display at the Galleria Dallas mall.  Sculptures, all related to the goal of feeding those in need, included an ear of corn-on-the-cob, a tug boat, a Tonka toy truck, and a dragon.

CANstruction is a national food drive organized by the Society for Design Administration, an affiliate of the American Institute of Architects.  On Saturday, Oct. 3, architects and engineers from 18 Dallas-area architectural firms, oversaw the assembly of the sculptures that were made of canned and packaged food items.

“This 14th annual design and construction competition resulted in the donation of 80,000 food items,” said Cindy Savell, Dallas CANstruction committee chairperson.  “The items were given to the North Texas Food Bank, which will distribute them to over 400 non-profit agencies, including food pantries, emergency shelters, soup kitchens and after-school programs.”

Among the “deCANstruction” crews were youth and adults representing:

  • Cadette Girl Scout Troop 8787, Lakewood and East Dallas
  • Boy Scout Troop 80, Highland Park Presbyterian Church
  • Boy Scout Troop 718, Lovers Lane United Methodist Church
  • Boy Scout Troop 730, St. Mark’s School of Texas
  • Boy Scout Troop 890, Lake Highlands United Methodist Church
  • Venturing Crew 2485, Dover Elementary School, Richardson

"Troop 8787 Scouts love getting together to help serve others,” said Phyllis Infanzon, their leader and an architect with URS Corp., one of the competing firms.  “This was our third consecutive year to help with “deCANstruction.”

This was the second consecutive year that North Trail District Boy Scouts and adult volunteers have helped take down sculptures.  “The third point of the Scout Law is, ‘A Scout is helpful,’” said Paul Stauffer, adult volunteer of Venturing Crew 2485 and advisor of Yanush Chapter, Mikanakawa Lodge, Order of the Arrow.  “I cannot think of better ways to help our community than to support the CANstructin competition in October and Scouting for Food in February.”
