North Trail District Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturers and adult volunteers will begin to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the U.S. Scouting movement by participating in the 30th annual Circle Ten Council Winter Camp and being among hundreds of volunteers who will help stage the Comerica Bank New Year’s Parade in Downtown Dallas.

Winter Camp at Clements Scout Ranch

Circle Ten Council Winter Camp, with a Western Roundup theme, will be held from Sunday, Dec. 27 through Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009, at the Clements Scout Ranch in Athens, Texas.  Winter Camp, the Council’s largest camping event, will offer Boy Scouts advancement opportunities and four nights of camping.  Special fun activities will include a Native American Pow Wow, Mountain Man Village, climbing tower, model rocket launch, Great Sled Race, Polar Bear Swim as well as mountain-bike and horse-back trail rides.

Once again, youth members of the Mikanakawa Lodge, Order of the Arrow, will staff Winter Camp. Youth leads will be Cody Achimon, Troop 884, Garland, camp director; Preston Leahy, Troop 262, Plano, and Justin Carson, Troop 605, Denison, program directors; Michael Yancey, Troop 751, Richardson, and Jason Follis, Troop 508, Irving, business directors.

“It’s not too late for Troops to sign up for Winter Camp,” says Achimon.  “Winter Camp information can be found online through www.miki.org.”  Regular Troop registrations, with a basic fee of $25 per attendee, must be postmarked by Saturday, Dec. 5, 2009.  Late registrations will require a basic fee of $40 per attendee.

Comerica Bank New Year’s Parade

Less than 24 hours after Winter Camp ends, Circle Ten Council Scouts and adult volunteers will participate in the Comerica Bank New Year’s Parade.   It will start at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 1, 2010, in the Downtown Dallas Arts District at Ross Avenue and Harwood.  Units will march west on Ross Avenue to Lamar, then to Houston and end at All-Star Way next to the American Airlines Center.

Before the parade begins, Circle Ten Council volunteers will help place barricades and trash containers along the parade route and then have lunch at the First Baptist Church of Dallas.

Circle Ten Scouts will be very visible in the parade itself, according to Wendy Kurten, Circle Ten Council Marketing Director.  “Scouts in uniform will carry banners identifying each marching unit,” she says.  “Also, Eagle Scouts will walk the 1 ½ mile parade route holding a large U.S. flag while others will march along with the FedEx Office Circle Ten Council float.”

“We hope to have at least 250 youth and adult volunteers representing the Council at the parade,” says Mrs. Kurten.  “Scouts and adult volunteers can click on the parade logo at www.circle10.org for more information and to register to participate in this exciting event.”

North Trail District

The North Trail District is comprised of Cub Scout Packs, Boy Scout Troops and Venturing Crews units in Lake Highlands, North Dallas, the Park Cities, Preston Hollow and Richardson.  North Trail is one of 19 geographic districts that make up the Circle Ten Council.
