Boy Scout Troop hikes Palo Duro Canyon
Boy Scout Troop 1199 of Garland, Texas traveled to Palo Duro Canyon State Park over the long MLK Holiday. Thirty Scouts and Scouters departed Friday evening. The Scouts camped the first night at Coppers Break State Park. They arrived at Palo Duro Canyon State Park on Saturday afternoon and went on a hike in the beautiful scenic canyon. Palo Duro Canyon State Park opened in 1934 and contains 29,182 acres of the scenic, northern most portion of the Palo Duro Canyon. On Sunday morning, the Scouts awoke to frost on their sleeping bags inside of their tents as the temperature plummeted to 18 degrees. The boys were prepared for the cold weather and prepared for hiking with their backpacks. Sunday turned into a beautiful day for a long hike into the canyon. As always, the Scouts prepared all of their own meals. The boys utilized many of their Scouting skills over the long weekend. The camp site was cleaned up and all the gear was packed away on Monday for the long drive home. Troop 1199 is chartered to Arapaho Baptist Church and serves young men in the Garland, Sachse, Rowlett and Richardson area. Hunter Sappington is the Senior Patrol Leader. Jason Landrum, Adam Loving and Luke Stahl are Assistant Senior Patrol Leaders. Mark Stahl is the Scout Master.
