Three drum majors have been named to lead the 2010-2011 Coppell High School Marching Band.

Incoming senior Violet Coker will serve as head drum major while Emily Hyslop will be senior assistant drum major and Jonathon Zuniga will serve as junior assistant drum major.

Associate Director Doug Grice said the drum majors are very important to the success of the marching band.

"The drum major is the leader of the marching band during rehearsals and in performance," Grice said. "The drum majors' job is to carry out the instructions of the band director and other instructional staff regarding what needs to be done with the band."

Coker, the daughter of Jerry and Bianca Coker, was the junior assistant drum major last year and a trombone squad leader her sophomore year and she also served as the freshman representative for the band.

"I'm really excited about making head drum major," Coker said. "I am really looking forward to implementing some of my new ideas and leading and uniting this great group of kids. I'm so proud of what this band has accomplished and I'm truly honored to be in this position."

Other band honors include earning a spot in the CHS Honor Band on the tenor trombone as a freshman, making All-Region Band all three years in high school, advancing to pre-area and area both her freshman and sophomore years and competing in the state solo contest as a sophomore.

Outside of band, she served as the president of the critical theory club last year and will serve as president of that group this next year.  She was the sophomore vice president of the National Honor Society and was initiated into the National Spanish Honor Society as a junior.

In addition, she is involved in the First United Methodist church through youth Bible studies and musical volunteering. She also is a dedicated Girl Scout member and has been since she was five.

Hyslop, a bassoonist in the CHS Honor Band since her freshman year and the daughter of Tommy and Janie Hyslop, served as assistant junior drum major and was a marching band soloist last year and was the band secretary her sophomore year.

She also has made All-Region Orchestra and All-Region Band and qualified for area competition numerous times as well as competing in the state solo contest as a freshman and as a junior.

Other school activities include being on the Coppell Cowgirls junior varsity softball team as a freshman and a member of the Spanish Club and CHS student awareness program called START. Hyslop also is active in the First United Methodist Church through singing in the church choir and traveling on various mission trips.

Zuniga, the son of Reymund and Cynthia Zuniga, earned a division I rating at the state solo contest both his freshman and sophomore years on the alto saxophone.

After his freshman year, he was selected to attend a leadership camp led by CHS Principal Brad Hunt. He also is a member of the National Honor Society and outside of school he is active in the St. Ann Catholic Church High School Ministry.
