Up in Smoke is a winner for Greg Matlack of Frisco

1 Rating / 0 Comments

Do you like the human cannonball photo? It was submitted by Greg Matlack of Frisco as part of our State Fair of Texas photo contest. And guess what? Of more than 450 images submitted to neighborsgo.com by readers, it was judged the best by Pulitzer Prize-winning photographers at The Dallas Morning News!

I was the lucky one who got to inform Greg about his photo being judged the best reader-submitted photo of the 2007 State Fair of Texas.

“I’m surprised,” he said.

He told me that he had spent the day at the fair with his son, Andrew, 8, and  that the human cannonball was the last stop of the day for them. It was also his last chance to snap a photo.

“I must have taken 500 photos that day at the fair,” said Matlack, who also is father to Connor, 4. “And this one turned out the best.”

Irwin Thompson, deputy editor for photography at The Morning News, said the photo “captures a peak moment.”

“It’s a Page 1A photo all the way,” he added.

Not only has Matlack never won a photo contest before, he’s never even entered one. (He does, however, take a lot of photos of his son’s YMCA Guides group.)

“I saw (the notice about the contest) in the Frisco neighborsgo paper and decided to enter the photo,” he said. “It was easy putting it up on the neighborsgo.com Web site. I would encourage anyone to try it.”

So you heard Mr. Matlack – visit neighborsgo.com/photos and search for “state fair” to view all the other entries. (You can also view the Top 20 at this link: http://www.neighborsgo.com/video/368)

For his great shot, he will receive a photo printer. What will you win if you enter one of our weekly contests?

Visit neighborsgo.com to find out. Sign up to share your stories, photos and videos. I scan the site daily for items that are timely and relevant to the Frisco and Little Elm communities, so post early and often!

Also, if you want extra copies of the print version of neighborsgo, you can pick them up for free at any Starbucks in Frisco. Until next week – happy posting!
