VNA and Santa deliver on Christmas
Cold temperatures, sunny skies, and a surprise visit from Santa Claus greeted more than 700 volunteers who gathered early Christmas morning to help the Visiting Nurse Association deliver Meals on Wheels. A special Christmas meal of turkey and gravy, sweet potato casserole, green beans, dinner roll, pecan pie, and milk went out to more than 3,300 homebound frail elderly, sick, and disabled residents of Dallas County on December 25. Gift bags from Santa were included with the Christmas meals on the 332 delivery routes. Christmas Meals on Wheels were prepared in VNA's temporary kitchen in Irving and then transported to the parking lot of the Comerica Bank service building in Dallas to be picked up with gift bags for delivery. Families of volunteers, including nearly 50 from the Sri Sathya Sai Baba organization, helped not only deliver Meals on Wheels, but also distributed route maps to drivers and loaded meals and gift bags into their cars. All of VNA's Meals on Wheels operations, including Thanksgiving and Christmas deliveries, will return to 1440 W. Mockingbird Lane when construction of a new kitchen is completed in 2008.
