My Possibilities - Enhancing the Lives of Adults with Developmental Disabilities

0 Ratings / 0 Comments
What do adults with development disabilities do when they age out of the public school system at 22 years old?  Many examples in Collin County show that these adults have no full time, full year activities to continue their learning, job skill training and socialization. Collin County has a reputation as an excellent place to educate children with disabilities. On their 22nd birthday, they are on their own. In Collin County, many of the 14,000 adults with disabilities between the ages of 20 and 60 loose track of friends and regress in their learning.  They are home alone or family members leave their jobs to provide constant care.   All of this adds up to many citizens decreasing their contributions to our community.

As industrious as Collin County is, how can we improve this situation? We need full time, full year services in Collin County that help adults with disabilities.  These services need to address the specific needs of each individual. Some are more dependent on professionals to assist in their development.  With support, some adults will be able to work in businesses throughout Collin County. With the support of several agencies, such as The ARC of Dallas and LifePath and Collin County school districts,  that support individuals with special needs My Possibilities was formed in December 2007.

My Possibilities is a full day, full year program for adults with disabilities - the first of its kind - in Collin County and surrounding areas.  The current plan is to begin the program June 1, 2008.  Donations are needed renovate the space we'd like to rent and pay the deposit.

This is an opportunity for everyone - businesses, houses of worship, educators, service providers, and local government - to pull together for adults with disabilities and a perfect way for adults to help adults. There are very few ways a community can leave legacy for future generations.  This is truly an opportunity to make a difference.

We are having an open house on Sunday, January 27, 1:30-400 at the potential location for the first My Possibilities center in Collin County. Come see what we can do together.  Click here for more details about the open house and more information on My Possibilities.  For questions or comments, please contact myposscore@external.cisco.com .
